Use a tire inflation cage for a safe working environment
At Martins
Tire safety cages are a big part of our product lines, with 6 different standard products ranging from a portable 2 bar safety cage for service trucks to OTR and tractor tire restraining device.
Why Use an Inflation Cage
It’s important to understand that a tire inflation cage is made to protect workers from the explosion of a tire due to over inflation or failing material, and that the danger comes from the rim or wheel part, and not the tire. A defective rim can be thrown at and incredible speed, with over 50 000 pounds of pressure! In Quebec, on December of 2009, an accident occurred, killing instantly the mechanic who was inflating the tire, and throwing the rim at the ceiling of the shop making a hole of 6 feet by 3 feet in the steel structure. Tire explosion is an actual danger that can be prevented. View a video of a tire exploding and consult documentation on the subject.
Many people are still dying from these work accidents; Occupational Safety & Health Administration of the Unites-States implemented a regulation concerning this issue as it has a high potential for severe injury and death. Having your employees understand the importance of taking a few seconds more to work safely with a tire safety cage makes good sense. These safety cages are a mandatory precaution for tire inflation; they provide good protection and exceed the U.S. federal OSHA Standard 29 CFR, 1910.177
Selecting an inflation cage
Portable
First, if you might use your restraining device in a service truck, you have 2 options: the MIC-2, which is a foldable 2 bar cage that you can open when you need to inflate your tires and closes down to 6" when not in need, or the MIC-2WB, our larger 2 bar portable safety cage, made to accommodate super single truck tires.
Static
If you’re to use a cage inside your tire shop, your choice may vary from the 3, 4 & 5 bars tire safety cages, depending on the diameter of your wheel or rim, and not the tire diameter. Choose the one that suits your most common rim on the tires that you inflate.
Martins Industries’s inflation cages
Our cages are the strongest built on the market; we use HSS or Hollow Structural Sections tubing. A high-strength welded steel tubing, with a diameter 2-3/8" for more security (while our competitors Ken-Tool and Branick use 2-1/4" pipes). All welds are made according to the Canadian Welding Bureau CSA.W47.1 welding standard. We apply powder coated paint that is baked at 400 F° for top quality and a long lasting finish. We provide Instructions in English, French and Spanish on the cages, for the proper use of the safety inflation cage. The cages are shipped meticulously packaged in carton to protect them during freight as we don't want your inflation cages to arrive with any damage.
